Under the OCI card scheme, Persons of Indian Origin(PIO), who are citizens of other countries, (except Pakistan and Bangladesh), but were citizens of India on or after 26th January, 1950 or were eligible to become citizens of India on 26th January 1950, are eligible to register themselves as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).

Application for registration has to be made online through the web site of Ministry of Home Affairs https://ociservices.gov.in/ Instructions therein may be pursued carefully particularly with respect to supporting documents required.Please refer to the check list provided by High Commission CLICK HERE so that there are no mistake in submission of application. Part A and Part B of the application form have to be filled online and printout of the application form along with documents is required to be submitted to High Commission. Applicant who is above 12 years old is required to be present in person for submission of the application form due to Bio_Metric enrolement process. However, in case of minor children below 12 years old either parent can submit on behalf.

Documents required

The required documents listed below are indicative in nature and attempt has been made to cover majority of the cases. However, the Consular Officer may ask for additional documents after examining the application. After making an online application and uploading all required documents as per the check list provided for respective services, please report to the High Commission with a hard copy of the application along with the documents (originals and photocopies) and two photographs size 2’x2’ with white background (square shape with 80% coverage by face. The documents are to be produced in original for verification and photocopies of the same to be attached with application. If the applicant ever held an Indian Passport, then proof of renunciation of citizenship/surrender of passport certificate should also be submitted.

Kindly note that the High Commission will accept an application for grant of OCI status after satisfying itself on the adequacy and authenticity of supporting documentation provided. In certain cases this is likely to take time as the documents may require verification from the issuing authorities in India. In such cases the High Commission cannot prescribe the timeframe within which the OCI card will be issued. In these cases, at the stage of initial application, an acknowledgement will be provided to you. Applicants are advised to keep track of their OCI status online.

The High Commission of India may ask for additional documents if required for processing the OCI application form.

Processing time: It is not possible for the High Commission to give exact processing time but it may take approximately 60 days.

Applicants are advised to keep track of the OCI status in the Online Status Enquiry.

Photo should be square shape of size not less than 2” X 2” white background (with 70-80% coverage of face) without the border with front view of person's head and shoulders showing full face in middle of the photograph. it should not be stapled and not have any signatures.

Signature - Height and width of the Signature Photo must have aspect ratio 1:3. If child below 5 years is unable to sign, then thumb impressions (left hand) with Blue/Black Ink only will have to be uploaded. Minor children who are able to sign/write their names should do so and it should be uploaded. Parents need to sign in the relevant space in the application form.

(Note: Photo submitted must be same as uploaded online with the application. Please also check if the signature printed on the OCI application are clear and of adequate sizeas per Sample Photo/Signatures below.)

Current valid passport, with validity of minimum 6 months at the time of submission of application. (Upload online- Current passport category) * Malaysian passport must be uploaded with signatures on observation page and IC copy.

Copy of appointment confirmation letter.

IN ADDITION TO ABOVE DOCUMENTS, APPLICANT ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS DEPENDING UPON THE CATEGORY UNDER WHICH APPLYING FOR OCI

A. APPLYING ON OWN INDIAN ORIGIN- FORMER INDIAN PASSPORT HOLDER:

Malaysian Citizenship- Attested by MoFA (Upload online)- Provide photocopy also

Surrender/renunciation Certificate of Indian Passport. (Upload online)- Provide photocopy also

Copy of Indian passport (1st and Last Page) (Upload online)- Provide photocopy also

(i) Applicants who have obtained foreign nationality after year 2000, are mandatory required to submit Surrender Certificate/Renunciation of Indian Citizenship Certificate.

(ii) Applicants who have held an Indian passport, and obtained foreign nationality before year 2000, citizenship and previous Indian Passport copy.

B. APPLICANT BORN IN INDIA AND NEVER HELD INDIAN PASSPORT AND TRAVELLED ON PARENTS INDIAN PASSPORT OR OWN FOREIGN PASSPORT:

Birth Certificate clearly indicating names of parents. (Upload online- Relationship category)- Provide photocopy attested by MoFA

If born in India between 26 January, 1950 to 30 June, 1987: Birth Certificate issued by Indian Government.

Proof of Indian Origin of Applicant's parents/Grand Parents/Great Grand Parents (Upload online)- Provide photocopy also

I. Being a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after the commencement of the Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950; or

II. Being eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of commencement of the Constitution i.e. 26.01.1950; or

III. Belonging to a territory that became part of India after 15th August, 1947.

C. APPLICANT BORN OUTSIDE INDIA AND NEVER HELD INDIAN PASSPORT - APPLYING ON THE BASIS OF PARENTS/ GRAND PARENTS/GREAT GRAND PARENTS

Birth Certificate clearly indicating names of parents (Upload online- Relationship Certificate category)- Provide photocopy also (attested by MoFA)
Foreign issued Post-dated birth certificates (old birth certificates re-issued later/duplicate true copies of Birth Certificates) should be duly apostilled by concerned Foreign Office/Embassy.

If applying on the basis of Parents/Grand Parents/Great Grand Parents, provide documents (Birth certificates or equivalent) to verify relationship among applicant, his/her Grand Parents/Great Grandparents. . (Upload online- Relationship Certificate category attested by MoFA)
